Health Journey: Week 1

So, here's the skinny: I am ready to be healthy again. Did you know that I graduated from college with a degree in health? Or that I worked for a health clinic as a counselor for a couple years before my first baby was born? It makes me sick to think of all my healthy habits I let slide. Back then, the taste of butter was unappetizing because it was too rich. Grapes and berries were my favorite dessert. It is my mission to get those healthy-food-craving taste-buds back. And all it takes is a little discipline. Easy, right? (ha!) It's not just about eating. I want to be able to run and lift weights like I used to. I want to be able to play and hike with my kids. It is going to be a journey, and I'd love to have you join me. (I may even have a couple giveaways for participants!) I am not sure how long this will last. Perhaps through the summer? I'll go until these habits are ingrained.

Each week, I am going to have a focus. However, because this is the first week, I'm going to assign 2 to get the ball moving:

01. Journal Your Food: Become aware of everything you put into your mouth. Right down to every bite, lick and taste. Write it down. This is so important to changing eating habits. It will also help you with meal plans in the future.
02. Get Moving: Make a goal for yourself. If you haven't been working out, set an attainable goal. (Walking 30 minutes, 3x's a week.) If you have been exercising, bump up the intensity. Workout a little longer or add an additional day.

Good luck on your journey! Hopefully this will motivate me to be a little better.

  1. I would love to join! In my second to last post, I talked about how an old high school friend told me I had gained a bit of weight - what a good motivation to get healthy again, right? I think it'd be fun to see a fellow blogger's progress and transition into a healthier lifestyle, so I will definitely keep on the lookout for your health journey tips. So far, so good with your two focus points! I'll start bright and early tomorrow morning. Good luck!

  3. I'm on board, Miss Hannah. For me, it IS about losing weight...and being healthy. I lost 145 pounds the year before last...and put a lot of it back on. I've recommitted myself recently to eating right...and MOVING. Because I papercraft, I sit A LOT. And at my day job...I am in my office - sitting A LOT. I'm really big, so the exercise is gradual for me. Fat folk can't go out and run a marathon - we'll have a heart attack - ha!
But MOVING....eating the way that works for me to lose weight....and yes, writing down everything I eat....all works together in tandem.
    Go team!

  4. "Here's the skinny." Ha! That's cute.

So I have been thinking about this too. I'm in. Especially after a pregnancy where I was encouraged to eat high calorie things all the time, and when my nursing/pumping comes to an end. I'm really going to miss that extra help keeping the weight off (well, being able to eat anything I want, really). It's going to be a hard adjustment. Thanks for the motivation!

  5. I'm refocusing on being healthy too as well as making better choices. I normally do pretty good but got a bit off track. Good luck with your journey.

  6. I'm totally in....
Love your blog. I think I'll add you to my blog list and follow you this summer if that's ok? Anything that will motivate me to eat healthy will be great! Especially during swimsuit season : )

    Thanks!

  7. I'm in too!! This pregnancy is proving to be challenging for me as fas as my eating habits go. Whopper Jr's have been my weak point :)

I won't be trying to "lose" weight for a few more months, but for this last trimester I want to focus on healthier eating! (Luckily I already get a good workout in a few times a week, but the blasted calories in all my cravings are cancelling out all my efforts!)

This will be fun, thanks hannah!

  9. Yay, love the idea of getting healthy! Just today I made it outside to play with my little boy! It was fun and I got a bit of a tan ;) I started a couple of weeks ago to eat more fruits and drink more water! It has helped a lot and I already noticed I lost a couple of pounds! Thanks for the extra push!

  10. I've been feeling similar - about wanting to get back into healthier routines. Today's my birthday, so I'm taking the day off.. but after that, it's being aware of what I'm eating, and being better about getting those workouts in.

  11. This is something I really need to do, as well.....I put on 50+ lbs with each of my three babies and now I still have about 20lbs to lose to be at my goal weight....it is just a struggle for me lately. I am cutting way down on white flowers and processed sugars right now and I am going to start a food journal, but the exercise thing is hard for me right now with a broken big toe....any suggestions?? ;) I love to exercise, but I have a hard time exercising without bearing weight on my right foot (especially the toe).

  13. Hannah, props to you! I am a wife, not a mom yet, of two years, and after I got married, I've let loose. Actually just over the weekend, I started working out in order to be healthy again. I also wanted to start to change my diet slowly, which I know will be difficult since I have such a big sweet tooth. I wanted to keep a healthy lifestyle now so that when the time comes for me to have kids, I'll hopefully keep the healthy lifestyle. Anyways, you can do it, girl!

  14. My husband and I have recently switched up our eating habits and have gone from eating out every night to eating in most nights. We've both got a long way to go but it's encouraging to read that there are others with the same interests also want to live a healthier life. I will be following along to see what you and those that comment here today do to get healthy!
