Project Organize :: Ribbon Storage.
09 August 2010RIBBON STORAGE by Hannah Craner
I'm all about storage solutions that are both practical and pretty. A few months ago, my ribbons were stored in a way that was neither. I had all my ribbon on spools in a big, red IKEA box. The spools were unraveling. There were little ribbon scraps everywhere. The ribbon was tangled and I couldn't find the color I was looking for. I decided that wasn't working for me. (I wish I would have taken a picture...cause it was an enormous mess.)
I was crafting with a friend of mine in February and she had an adorable jar of ribbons wrapped around vintage clothespins. I decided to steal the idea.
I bought the clothespins at my local Ace Hardware. (They were $5 for 50. I have heard that a lot of people have found vintage clothespins at Dollar Tree, but my local store doesn't carry them.)
My friend told me she found her jar at Walmart, so I followed her lead. I found the perfect jar in the office supply area. It was tall and fat with a darling silver lid. They were $12/each, but because I needed three, I decided that was too much money. (I'm cheap.) In the kitchen area, however, I found glass cookie jars for $5/each! They were about the same size with almost the same silver lid. (The $12 lid fit tightly, but the cookie jar lid doesn't at all.)
Using clothespins with ribbon is pretty self explanatory. You take the ribbon, insert the end into the slot and then wrap the remaining ribbon around the clothespin. Secure with a pin. Sort them into jars. I sort by color. My friend, however, prefers to sort by finish. (She has satin ribbon in one jar, grosgrain ribbon in another.)
I love this new storage solution for a few reasons. First, it is cute. Second, I can store a few inches or up for 4-5 yards the same way. Third, they are very easy to use and way easy to spot the right ribbon in the clear jar.

I am loving this!!!
ReplyDeleteOnce I finish my "sewing space" I think I might have to copy it!
Ok, so I got that same jar... (as a candy jar in my kitchen) but it had the same silver un-tight lid. I spray painted it a flat black and it turned out SO cute. So in case you, like me, aren't a huge fan of the silver, they spray paint oh so nicely! LOVE the clothespin idea!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great idea! I could see this working for my bead cord too. And it is such a pretty way to store something.
ReplyDeleteLove.Love.Love.Love.Love.
ReplyDeleteDid I mention that I love this?
It IS cute...and colorful. Love seeing pretties like this. What do you do with ribbons like from Papertrey...or even SU! - - you just take them off the roll and put them on the clothespins and drop them in the jar? I just use my Clip it Up! Ribbon Organizer..it's colorful too...something about having all those colors to look at just makes creating so much more fun!
ReplyDeleteI put Papertrey Inks all on one clothespin. Stampin' Up's are huge, so I usually split it between two.
ReplyDeletein LOVE.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea. I do have lots of ribbon for my cookie favors and cakes. This is the perfect way to store them.
ReplyDeleteThank you!

What a super cute idea!! Love the clothespins-and the jars! Don't you store your buttons in similar jars? I feel like I remember reading a post with a photo of button jars all lined up (also adorable and so convenient). I can just imagine your craft room... too cute.
ReplyDelete@Janell: My buttons are in similar jars, but are much, much smaller. These are cookie jar sized. My buttons are in spice jars from IKEA. But yes, they are all lined up too.
ReplyDeleteMy craft room is anything but spectacular. Very normal office looking. Those are two of my only cute things. ;)
Hannah - This is so cute! I love those little clothes pins. Makes me wish I had a bunch of ribbon sitting around!
ReplyDeleteOh! It's like a ribbon candy store! YUM!!!
ReplyDeleteYour blog is new to me and I just love all parts of it. My daughter found it and shared it with me. I just love this idea for storing ribbons! I've come across so many ideas, and of all of them I now have two favorites. Will try this out. Thanks for sharing.
