I knit. I do! Barely, but I can officially get my yarn to stay together. I am currently working on my first project: a scarf who's function will obviously be warmth and not high-fashion. After I master the scarf, I am going to move on to bigger and better things: making a blanket to wrap my cute little winter-babe in. He will be arriving in the coldest of Utah months: January. It better be warm and cozy.
I taught myself to knit. It is true. I had great plans to have my mother, the master, teach me while she was in town...but we were too busy talking to get any real crafting in. (I love having an excuse to fly to Hawaii, but it is hard having her live so far away!)
I did a lot of research to get started and then later to correct mistakes. (Which were many...) Here are two great resources I found:
Teach Yourself Visually Knitting - A FABULOUS book for the visual learner like myself. It gives wonderful, full color, step-by-step pictures to walk you through every step of the way. Also...there are some pretty patterns in the back that are perfect for beginners. (One of which is the blanket I plan on working on next...)
Knitting Help - If you are like me, and are still messing up even with full color, step-by-step pictures because you need to see knitting in action, this is the site for you. It offers wonderful video tutorials that are really what made it click for me.
Good luck with your knitting endeavors! If you know of any great resources and feel inclined to share, please do. I'll be so grateful!

I did the same thing when I was pregnant with McKenna and I'm so glad I did. I have a great book of patterns for knit socks for babes. You are welcome to borrow it anytime.
ReplyDeletei'm gonna do it!
ReplyDeleteOh good job you. I love LOVE knitting. I was thinking about writing a post similar to this on my own blog!
ReplyDeleteMy next trip to JoAnn's will definitely be spent at the knitting section. Thanks for the resources!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I know you're really busy and I completely understand if you can't help me out, but I was wondering where you got the code for your comments? I mean, the additional message underneath "Leave your comment" once you click through, where it says "thank you for reading"? Thanks so much! :]
Anne: there actually isn't coding for that. You just do it in the settings tab of blogger under the comments section in the comment form message box.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I can't tell you how annoyed I was last night, trying to figure out the code or if there was a simple settings change. :] Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteWhen you really start getting into patterns and you are not sure what certain abbreviations mean try You Tube. It has helped me finish so many baby hats and booties. Sublime yarn has some really great baby pattern books, if you decide to go that far. Love it!
ReplyDeleteI love knittinghelp.com! I just learned in February of this year and I am totally addicted. I think your scarf looks great!
ReplyDeleteLooks great. Good thing you are more of a perfectionist than me - pretty sure my first attempt would be uneven!
ReplyDeleteYay, you're doing it!
ReplyDeleteI have always wanted to learn now to knit! I'm gonna try that book.
