I grew up in a home with a mother who was a tad anal-retentive about cleanliness. She hated things out of place, dusty furniture or crumbs on the carpet. My mother could not go on with life until the house was back to her standards. She wasn't just a woman who liked things clean. I actually think my mother enjoyed the scrubbing, polishing and cleaning process. Sadly, I didn't inherit her passion for cleaning. I hate cleaning. But, growing up with an ultra-clean mother not only gave me a knowledge of how things should be done, but also a love for order. My home isn't always to my mother's standards. In fact, I often feel anxiety when she comes to visit because I worry she will see my dusty floorboards or fingerprints on the windows. (She never mentions them, though, so my worries are probably unfounded.)
It was always a mystery to me how some of you found the time to craft, make healthy meals AND keep a perfectly clean home. I was just trying to survive by doing the minimum until my friend Kiersta, a home-organization guru, taught me about her "system." She made a list of all my chores and divvied them up between 5 days. Saturdays were my free day and Sundays were my day of worship. Oh, my. This plan SAVED me. It took me between 30 minutes and 1 hour to finish my chores everyday and my house was always in pretty good condition. It is a system that works perfect for me.
I typed the chores up on index-card sized cardstock and them laminated them. I keep them on a mini-easel on my desk. I love visualizing my progress, so I use a dry erase marker to cross things off as I complete them. It works great! I have a goal to design cute house-cleaning cards in the near future and spiral bind them.
I want to know your house-keeping secrets. How do you amazing women do it all?

You are so on the ball. You've been to my house enough times to know some things don't happen as regularly as they should. I should check out your system!
ReplyDeleteWow Hannah. I'm quite certain YOU are one of those ladies that makes us wonder how you get it all done. I'm impressed by this system...and the size of that Monday list!
ReplyDeleteoh.. PLEASE share your chore list for each day! I'd love to have Saturday free and Sunday for Worship! Let us in on the secret!
ReplyDeleteThat's such a cute idea! I love it:) I have mine printed up on cute paper posted on my fridge.
ReplyDeletei commission my husband!!! thankfully he was home this week. i feel like for the first time EVER we have the entire house cleaned all at the same time. usually i have one thing cleaned one week, another the next, and another the next. never all at the same time. i recently added a monthly wipe down of the shower, for which i am embarrassingly proud of;-) only b/c until recently i didn't know tubs could actually stay white. i know, it's sad, it's disgusting, but it's true. i thought they just "changed colors" over time and could never look new and white again. i actually moved out of our first married apt and told the manager that it was just that color b/c the tub they used wasn't great quality. sigh. so embarrassingly. i really believed it! and the manager must have felt badly for me b/c we still got our deposit back.
ReplyDeletep.s. monday is always laundry day and i try to clean the bathroom around friday. i vaccum when i feel things in my toes (i know, gross), usually once a week, and i beg sean to mop our floors once a month. if it looks clean i am satisfied.
ReplyDeleteI love the site justorganizeyourself.blogspot.com (JOY)- and it's helped me with working a system, but I'd love to see more of yours too!
