...disgusting vandals

I am not a super political person. I enjoy keeping up on current events, but it is hard for me to follow too closely. I haven't decided if I am a conservative democrat or a liberal republican, but I lay somewhere right in the middle. Conservative radio bugs me and liberal media disgusts me. I feel like both parties have gone too extreme. Where is the moderate candidate I am looking for? I am afraid the age of moderates is gone...

I have strong feelings on many issues, but half of my strong feelings are "democratic" and the other half would be considered "republican." I was in favor for Proposition 8. I was thrilled when it passed. I believe ALL people should have the same freedoms. Proposition 8 was not written to take freedoms away from homosexuals; it was written to protect those of us who don't want our children taught that homosexuality is okay. What about our freedoms?

What happened to America? What happened to our freedom to vote? Since when is it okay to be violent and persecute others for their beliefs? I understand that homosexuals and others are disappointed that proposition 8 passed, but how does that give them the right to do THIS:This disgusts me. This is my friend's uncle's home. Here is what he wrote:

Last night 2500 protestors marched up the streets of Santa Monica Blvd towards the Mormon Temple with a huge sign that read "No on H8 (hate)/Stop the Hate" while smaller signs read "Mormon Hate must go." Apparently the irony of the hateful signs against Mormons was lost on those who were screaming against hatred.

The LDS church did not put this proposition on the ballot. They were asked to join with other churches in a broad based coalition to lend support on this issue...

In talking with my friends and fellow church members, I was discouraged by the number of crimes that were committed by those professing to stop the hate and discrimination. Among the crimes on local members here in the South Bay, I heard that bricks had been thrown through windows, cars were tagged with spray paint, others were keyed for having a bumper sticker, hurtful malicious and mean-spirited letters were put on cars, and of course numerous signs were stolen. As part of my support, I put a yard sign in my front yard. The sign was stolen twice. The second time was a full week before the election and I did not replace it.
Now, the persecution has escalated again. Last night, while we slept, our home and car was vandalized. In huge black letters the derogatory term "BIGOT!" was spray painted across our front door and more paint was slashed across our car. Obviously, this is very hurtful and disappointing... Will you please keep all of us here in California in your prayers?"
What happened to you America? What happened to the Land of the Free? I will be praying for those who are being persecuted in California. If anything come from our new president, I hope he can bring our country back together. I hope we can become united again.

EDITED TO ADD: I believe the LDS Church said it best in the statement they released today:

"It is disturbing that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is being singled out for speaking up as part of its democratic right in a free election.

"While those who disagree with our position on Proposition 8 have the right to make their feelings known, it is wrong to target the Church and its sacred places of worship for being part of the democratic process.

"Once again, we call on those involved in the debate over same-sex marriage to act in a spirit of mutual respect and civility towards each other. No one on either side of the question should be vilified, harassed or subject to erroneous information."

  2. it makes me ill to think that things like this is happening. people are singling out the church for having an opinion, just like they have their opinion. I too love what the church had to say!

  4. I may have not made this very clear. This is not my home...it is a friend's uncles's home. I just felt so badly for him and his family.

  5. wow, talk about getting out of hand. We'll make sure to keep all California members in mind, but also those who were in favor of prop. 8. People forget it's a constitutional right to vote! A privilege! Hopefully, somehow, it'll get resolved.
With all this going on, no wonder many LDS bloggers are moving to private blogs. Good job taking the plunge. :)

  6. It bothers me how protesters and people against prop 8 are targeting specifically the LDS church and no one else for the passing of the proposition. The church couldn't coerce CA voters, specifically all the minority voters who overwhelmingly supported Prop 8, all it could do was campaign in support of it.

Vandalizing property of a person exercising their right to vote doesn't really fit in with their whole 'end hate' mentality they are pushing so hard.

Our new pres elect is not in favor of defining marriage to include gay marriage. Are people going to call him a bigot? I would love to see that.

  7. My building had the windows shot out last night. How is vandalism an acceptable reaction when you don't get your way?
