...blog safety

THIS ARTICLE was linked on a blog I read. It made me think about the safety of my children and family. I have another blog that has switched from private to public to private to public. I struggle with the decision. My parents live far away from their grandchildren, so I mainly post picture of my children on that blog. My grandmother reads it and couldn't figure out the private blog when I switched. I want my children to be safe, but I also want family and friends to read my blog. What to do...what to do.

What are your opinions on it? Is your family blog private? How do you keep your family safe?

PS...Why can't blogger let the private blogs we subscribe to be updated on google reader?? Can't they make it like google groups? We should start a petition!

  1. much of my family has had this very same dilema. I thought this post had some helpful comments though:

  2. I have that dilemma as well- but I set it up so that when I post, it emails them to my grandma and the other technologically challenged members of the family. You can only do 10 emails, but you can always send one to yourself and forward to any of the other people it needs to go to if you have more than 10.

  3. Hi Hannah,
I totally agree. We have a long way to go to perfecting this private blog thing. Like you said, the biggest advantage of a public blog is that my computer illiterate parents can read it. I think you can keep a blog public if you are smart about it.

Here are some things that drive me crazy when I see moms post about:
    - When there husbands are out of town! (I'm so bored because my husband is out of town...)
    - When they are going on vacation
    - New addresses
    - Naked kids (in bathtubs etc.)

They say you're not supposed to post pictures of your kids at all, because someone could put them on a billboard in China or something- but I personally think this is probably a little overkill- my blog is my journal about my kids of course it is going to include their pictures.

    My two cents....

  5. You know I have had this same dilemma and I have switched from private to public over and over again as well. I just say go with your gut. I have gotten rid of my last name, the state I live in, etc. etc. to make sure that people can't pin point who and where we are unless they really know us. Also, I always post AFTER a vacation, not during... unless my husband is home. :)

  6. Why does everything have to be so difficult? Why can't people just leave other people alone? I had my family blog private and then set it public b/c it was easier to access. So maybe I should change it back to private. It's like nothing can be easy these days...
