When I was a "tween," I used to babysit for my aunt, Michelle. I loved spending time with her family, but what I was most excited for was to read some of her vast children's library. She belonged to a monthly book order club and always had new, beautiful books with crisp pages. Although I have always liked to read, these babysitting weekends helped me develop my true love for children's literature.
I still love children's books. Yes, I like reading them to my children. I love cuddling on their beds at night and reading aloud the adventures of the brave mouse, Despereaux, or relaying the silly antics of everyone's favorite kindergartener, Ramona. But, even if I didn't have children, I would collect children's books...just for me. I love to read them. Good children's books are cleaver, sweet and simple. Often, reading them is just the kind of escape I need.
I've compiled a list of my kids' and my favorite books. If you haven't read them, I highly recommend doing so!

I will always love the Mrs. Piggle Wiggle series and Amelia Bedelia books.
ReplyDeleteI loved your list. Reminded me of being a kid again. Funny story about Are you there God? It's Me, Margaret. In 6th grade I read it for a book report and when I showed up with my project my teacher announced it would be a peer edit. And the cutest boy in school was in my group. I was mortified! Haha!
Love this list. I can't wait til my little guy really gets into story time. I'm saving this list. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love your list. We've been doing lots of reading and trips to the library at our house. Glad to add a few good titles to our holds list to avoid as many disappointments by randomly picking books off the library shelves that "look" like they might be good. (You can browse too leisurely in the library with three kids five and under.)
ReplyDeleteI can no sooner pick a favorite children's book than star in the sky! You've hit a sweet spot for me! Matter of fact, we're running out of room, for all our children's books, so much so, that my dad is coming up tomorrow to put in a built-in case to hold more! Cannot wait! Great lists!
ReplyDeleteGreat list! As a kindergarten teacher, I'm infatuated with children's literature. Try these out too, I think you will enjoy them!
ReplyDeleteStellaluna by Janell Cannon
Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney
Winter King, Summer Queen by Mary Lister
The Quiltmaker's Gift by Jeff Brumbeau
Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey
The Napping House by Audrey Wood
The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein
The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister
Kitten's First Full Moon by Kevin Henkes
And, if you're feeling a little adventurous, try Skippyjon Jones by Judy Schachner. I have never met a child who wasn't in love with the silliness of this series! Of course, you will have to work on your spanish accent to read it ;)
Happy reading!
Annabelle and I have been reading the "Julie" (American Girl) books. They are so much better than I would have guessed. We started with "Meet Julie", then "Changes for Julie" and we just finished "Happy New Year, Julie", which was our favorite. Happy reading!
