...being frugal

J refuses to go get his hair cut by a professional. He makes me do it even though I hate cutting hair. I don't know how hairdressers do it. I think hair is so yucky and I hate the way it sticks to everything when it is wet. (I wish he would just go get it done by someone who knows what they are doing! I mean...who cares about $7 every 8 weeks?) Anyway...he claims he likes my haircuts best. (pshaw!)

So...the reason I am writing this is because J and I have been trying to think of ways to save money. (The state of our economy has made us think about being more resourceful and frugal.) J says that every little bit helps, so I will continue to be his hairdresser.

Here are some other ways J and I have decided to save our money...
1. Keep lights turned off if we aren't in the room.
2. Buy generic brand food. (When I can...sometimes the generic brand just doesn't cut it. It's the food snob in me...)
3. Free dates/dating at home.
4. Limit eating out to 1 time a month.
5. Create a budget (Sad that after 6.5 years of marriage...we still don't have a budget. But we will!)
6. Buy kids clothes the year before on clearance.

What are some of your money-saving tips?

  1. Making weekly menus (all meals and snacks) and then shopping once a week definitley helps me save on our food budget and keeps the impulsive grocery shopping down.

  2. We've really taken a hold of the riegns on this subject! Here's the things we've done to be more frugal:
    1. Do a monthly budget. We save all receipts and I log them into a simple excel file at the end of the month; we adjust our spending for the next month accordingly.
    2. I clip coupons every week and even get some online. www.pinchingyourpennies.com is a great resource.
    3. Buy clothes on clearance, or slightly used on eBay.
    4. Limit our driving.
    5. Check out books from the library.

I hope this doesn't make me sound cheap, but we sure have been creative about ways to save!

  3. Hi, I'm going from blog to blog reading about people I don't realy know :) I linked to yours through Rebekah's blog. To save money, my husband and I will check prices at Amazon.com - most of the time items are cheaper even with shipping. Also, run searches online for coupons; it's amazing what you'll find! For example, I really wanted to get my husband an NFL jersey as a gift. I googled NFL shop coupons and saved $15! OH, also drugstore.com carries A LOT of things and shipping is free over $25 and the prices are generally lower than in a store. And for your dinners out, I suggest signing up for the different restaurants that you guys like. We get a lot of coupons and when our birthdays come around, we get a free meal.

  4. Good ideas! One thing that we do is 2 or 3 months a year we only buy necessities. ABSOLUTE NECESSITIES. No extra spending. It's nice to see that if we had to we can really really cut back. It also uses all the food in our pantry so it gets rotated. And it saves us a few hundred bucks every few months!

  5. Being Frugal!? What!? If you ask my Hubby I don't know ANYTHING about that, but if you ask me I'm a Champion!! It's all about perspective =)

    1. I buy most of my clothes either at second hand stores or on eBay. Same goes for my kids.
    2. I buy all the underware for my boys on sale. I stock up then.
    3. I don't scrimp on food. We eat organic and fresh whenever we can. I'm afraid that I'm not much of a Frugal Shopper there. Hubby is right about that one, but I don't see him complaining when dinner is ready =)
    4. I don't buy anything that looks like it will end up in a garage sale. My boys don't have toys. We have TONS of books, legos, and we draw and color all the time. They both are genius at making their own costumes out of whatever is laying around as well! An example...

    5. If I can't decide if I want it or not, I check to see where it's made... if it's made in China, I pass. That's also how I decided which tires to buy for my car! LOL
    6. We rent movies instead of going to see them at the theater.
    7. We re-use everything. If something is stained, I cut it up and make it into something else. It takes a little imagination, but I have TONS of that! LOL

Those are a few of our money saving tips.

Thanks for yours!! We really need to get on a budget as well... Sigh... I even HATE the word BUDGET....
